BMC files case against contractor for damaging steps of Mumbai heritage site

The steps of Mumbai's Banganga lake were damaged during the desilting work at the site.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday filed an FIR against the manager of M/s Savani Heritage Conservation Private Limited and others for allegedly damaging the steps of Banganga lake.

During desilting work at the lake, on June 24, 2024, the contractor brought the excavator for removing the sludge on the steps of the lake which damaged the steps. Maharashtra Tourism Minister, Mangal Prabhat Lodha visited the site and sought action against those responsible.

"Restoration of damaged steps and removed stones has been completed. Further appropriate legal action will be taken accordingly. It is being clarified on behalf of the municipal administration that the remaining works will also be continued regularly in the future", a BMC official said.

The Banganga lake is an ancient structure. Over the years, due to various reasons, the steps of the lake, the stones of the steps, the lamp posts had dilapidated. Also, there were constructions on the stairs in the lake area. Hence a revitalisation project has been undertaken by BMC.
